Membership in Circle K is open to anyone who is a student at Christopher Newport University. This means a student of any age, gender, nationality, religion, sexuality, or social status. Everyone can help their community, and we in Circle K realize this. That is reason we encourage everyone to join and do not turn anyone away. The only requirement to join is that an individual pay an annual dues rate of $32. This rate is per year, not per semester as many other organizations do. If you cannot pay dues, come talk to us! We'll work something out for you. After all, we want you to join, and we do not want dues to discourage people from joining. However, as this is a community service organization, we would like to see people remain active. We do lots of service, but we do so much more as well. For more information, check out our activities page. In order to promote service and keep members active, the 2002-2003 Executive board accepted requirements for membership that will go into effect during the Fall semester of 2002 and remain active unless otherwise changed. What does this mean? As stated before, anyone can become a member. However, a member and an active member are two separate things. At the end of the Fall semester we have a member induction ceremony in which members who meet the requirements are pinned and officially deemed active members. Not meeting the requirements does not mean you have to quit the club. We would just like to encourage you to try to do you best to fulfill them.
Please don't be discouraged by the requirements. In addition to accepting them, the Executive Board also agreed to make exceptions to those who could not fulfill a particular requirement. Because of this, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't join right now! If you cannot meet one of these requirements, please come talk to us. We'll work something out! Of course, you might be thinking, how do I fulfill these requirements? It's easier than you think! Paying dues is pretty self explanatory, but if you have any questions about dues, please contact us! The second requirement is at the heart and soul of Circle K. While we encourage members to do as much service as possible, we understand that some individuals cannot make the time commitment to perform numerous hours. Achieving 10 hours of service per semester is simple. In fact, spanned across the semester, it's less than an hour per week! If you truly want to become involved in Circle K, do as much as you can. There are numerous scholarships and awards that can be earned for your selfless acts and commitment to serve! Requirement number three is to help promote Circle K to the Kiwanians who sponsor us. We are sponsored by two Kiwanis clubs, Peninsula at Oyster Point and Warwick, both of whom are local. They have weekly meetings and activities just like us. To meet this requirement, you simply have to visit one of their meetings (they offer free breakfast or lunch!) or one of their activities. If you happen to do a service project with the Kiwanians, you can also apply your time to the hours requirement! Lastly, our fourth requirement is to encourage district relations among Circle K'ers. Clubs across the district host numerous events each month, and usually they invite other clubs to join them. To meet this requirement you simply have to attend one of those activities. It can range from going to the Fall Training Rally, University of Delaware's Annual Hayride, Virginia Tech's Annual Formals, or even something as simple as attending a meeting of nearby William and Mary! In Circle K, we're all family, so let's get to know each other! |
